SEABURY — A promotional drone clipped an 18-foot inflatable mascot above Mariner Park at 3.45pm on Sunday, sending hundreds of foam balls tumbling across the pitch and into the stands during the Seabury United v Eastford Albion friendly. The match was stopped for 12 minutes while stewards and players cleared the playing area; there were no injuries among the 3,742 fans in attendance and play resumed without further incident.
The inflatable — carrying the logo of match sponsor Onex Mobile — deflated after a small collision with a SkyDrop Logistics courier drone that had been scheduled to deliver the ceremonial match ball. "It was chaotic for about two minutes and then it turned into proper family fun," said Claire Morton, Seabury United's general manager. "We will keep the footage forever, but our first priority was making sure everyone was safe." The club later offered the foam balls to fans as free keepsakes.
Referee Aisha Patel, who halted the game, said players and officials worked quickly to clear the pitch. "I was laughing before I was blowing the whistle — I’ve never had to officiate a half-time toy collection," she said. "Stewards and players were brilliant; it was handled smoothly and safely." Supporter Tom Reed, 42, summed up the mood: "Best halftime entertainment I've ever paid for. Kids were ecstatic, and adults were like kids again."
SkyDrop Logistics issued a statement Monday morning apologising for the error. Marco Benetti, a company spokesman, said the drone—an Onex Aero 16 provided by Onex Mobile for promotional deliveries—made an unexpected lateral drift as it descended. "This was a rare miscalculation in wind compensation during the approach," Benetti said. "Our team is conducting a full review and will work with the club and the league on tighter safety protocols."
County Sports Safety Officer Daniel Price visited Mariner Park after the game and said there was no structural damage to the inflatable or the ground. "No injuries and no damage of consequence," he said. "We always recommend that clubs review tethering practices for large promotional inflatables and suspend airborne deliveries until a full risk assessment is completed." Seabury United confirmed it will pause drone deliveries for the remainder of the season and switch to a hand-carried ceremonial ball at home fixtures.
Social media captured the scramble: a short video of fans diving for foam balls amassed more than 1.2 million views on SnapStream by Monday afternoon. The club later auctioned 150 signed foam balls and raised £2,400 for the club's community coaching programme. "If something's going to go wrong, it's nice when it becomes a positive," Morton said. "We’ve turned it into a fundraiser and a memory people will talk about for years."
On the pitch, play resumed at 3.57pm and Eastford Albion went on to win 2-1, but managers from both sides praised the crowd. Seabury manager James Harlow said: "We had to refocus, and the lads did. But I’ll be honest — that'll be a tough halftime to beat as a motivational tool." The club announced a family day for Saturday 26 September, when remaining foam balls will be handed to local youth groups and supporters.
